Love! Love! Love! this series. I read the series through – all nine books – and then started to re-read it prior to recommending it to my best friend. It has been a long time since someone has been able to capture such a great world in such a consistent way.
The first two books in the series, Heku & Valle, are free. The rest of the books Encala, Equites, Proditor, Ferus, Eternity of Vengeance, Ancients & Old Ones, and Banishment; are all $2.99 in ebook format. (I get my eBooks from Barnes & Noble). These books are well worth more than the $2.99 value; mostly as they range from just shy of 2,000 pages to just over. There are a few grammatical & typos in the books; but they weren’t enough to distract from the world that is woven.
One of the things that I really appreciated as a reader, is that each book “could” be an end to the story. So you don’t have to read all nine (9) books, unless you really want to. However, I think if you start the first one (and I highly recommend you do) then you will want to read all of them.
Genre: This series definitely falls into the paranormal. While I could say “what’s another name for vampire?” Heku could be the appropriate response, the take on the “vampire” world is unique (so far from all the other books/movies/legends I have heard/read). Again is a Heku really a vampire? Read the book and decide for yourself; according to the author… well you can always go read her definition on her site. 🙂
I think that is what makes this particular world come alive. Now, when I use the term “world” I am not referring to the planet, just the writing; as each author creates a world for us to step into. This particular storyline takes place mostly in the U.S. so there is a lot of familiarity to American readers.
These books contain some references (albeit none too graphic) that will make the imagination come alive; in there is a bit of violence (in the form of some torture and of course biting). If you are a sensitive reader to this type of thing, then I would not recommend. This did not hit my “sensitivity” button. However, whereas I think it wouldn’t offend a teenager, anyone younger I could not in good conscience recommend this series to.
Overall: All in all I simply love this series. It has a unique take on a world that will take you on an emotionally roller-coaster and you can definitely find yourself absorbed in.
Most of the reviews you will find on these books seem to be rave; however, there are a few out there that just aren’t. I recommend reading the first book, again it is FREE, and then decide if you love it or not. It might not be your thing, but if it is, this story is definitely one that is worth reading.
